Still life illustration

Morning on the hill | Finalist

Jelena loves observing and capturing the essence of small but beautiful moments in the magical realism of everyday life.

'Morning light on the hill' is a still life drawing in gouache brushes of Jelena's kitchen table at home.

It was selected as a finalist for the 2021 Member's Art Challenge - In the kitchen by the Art Gallery of NSW.

Jelena is particularly interested in the play of shadows and light on the materiality of objects represented in stylised perspectives.

A nostalgic breakfast

This print was designed to be a tea towel for the Wraptious Tea Towel Design Competition in the UK. It was awarded a Special Mention from over 500 international entries.

The illustration captures the scrumptiousness of breakfast on an Autumn morning with a playfulness of perspective, shadow and nostalgic rendering. Reminiscent of childhood breakfasts from simpler times, this tea towel makes a lovely gift.

Moonshine on the avenue

A painting illustrating the way the moonshine falls upon the neighbouring building's roof, as visible from my yard. It is brilliant and stark coastal life. Lockdown in Sydney and unseasonably clear skies have allowed for much admiration of the simple things close to home.

This atmospheric artwork is composed of gouache brushes and is available as a print.

The magi-patch

I discovered my love for gardening and my green thumb when I moved! This illustration shows a section of my magical home veggie patch. In the back of the garden, it is up against a big corrugated iron fence. I use the cans to water it in the mornings and the house creatures follow me down there to explore. Green beans, two types of potato, parsley, spinach, carrots, chives, rocket and beets are just a few of the things that grow in the magi-patch. Held together by odds and ends, it is a collage of natural chaos that is guarded by the big prickly pear. Toss a couple of eggshells leftover from breakfast into the soil, and it becomes a true safe haven for the little green hearts to grow.
