Hornsby REMAGINE Art Prize & Exhibiton

The Bigger Picture | Finalist

Jelena's digital artwork The Bigger Picture was selected as a Finalist in the Hornsby Remagine Art Prize & Exhibition 2021. The piece was created for competition in response to this year’s theme is ‘Fast fashion, fast food, fast running out of natural resources’. The work was illustrated digitally using delicate watercolour brushes with rich and blended colours on a beautiful giclee fine art print.

The work was on display at the Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre, Hornsby June 4 - 20.

Artist's Statement:

Ours is a world where reality is distorted and we often only see the curated highlights of the collective everyday experience. 'Livefaster_2021' is your all-too average platform user with an impulsion to live fast and stay young.  A corruption of the classic 'The Birth of Venus', the modern objectification of the woman pollutes the original virtues of the piece. This piece is a contemplation of the fast commodification of beauty and gender and the 'Best Before' attitude of instant gratification that creates a demand for cheap fashion that is mass-produced unethically and at a low quality. The user boasts the hypocrisy of 'clean living' in a world polluted by the very fast food 'health' products that are destroying our planet's oceans with their plastic, non-biodegradable packaging. Social media isn't real and the bigger picture always tells a more complex story, one of revelation and our failures as a society.
