101 Days of Lockdown

101 Days of Lockdown | Winner
Directed by Jelena Sinik
Created with Nicolette Axiak

101 Days of Lockdown is an experimental exploration into the mundane and domestic moments of aloneness that made up the human experience of the 2021 Australian pandemic lockdowns. The split screen film follows the lives of two best friends, 40km apart and on opposite sides of Sydney.

The unique format of one second of animation per day, creates a social document of the moods and moments that constituted both the similarities and differences of life in the Western and Eastern Suburbs during this strange time.

Directed by Jelena Sinik and created in collaboration with Nicolette Axiak, the film is a highly rendered rotoscope animation. Nicolette and Jelena animated their own stories exclusively, creating an interwoven autobiographical narrative much like a conversation, that intersects at times with shared distance activities.

The animated film is a social document that curates a true snapshot of the Australian experience in 2021, emphasising the different ways in which both artists navigated the restrictions distinct to their region.

"I just wanted to mention that I wanted to watch this two minute long digital work over and over, it contains so many relatable content elements and the style of digital drawing is captivating.

It speaks of isolation, friendship, the mundane and the absurd. I know in regional Queensland, we didn't go through the lockdown stress of people in our capital cities - but this work, if you have friends or relatives that went through that experience, you can recognise that in this work.

I don't know why I found it so uplifting as it represents a time that was incredibly challenging for so many, but it just validates how the pandemic affected us all and also the joy of getting through tough times with friends."
